Mind over matter

Mind Your Language!

Words have a tremendous impact on us – Rudyard Kipling once said “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind”. In an MMA sense, Tim Sylvia perhaps less than eloquently said “Half of this game is 90% mental”.

The point remains however that your inner monologue sends huge signals that affect your motivation, speed, strength, technique and mental resolve. Try this little test: get an instructor to spot you, and go to bench press a weight that you should easily lift. Now keep repeating the word ‘weak’ in your head – go ahead, try it. I’ll wait. What happened? In all of the times I have tested this, people have found it difficult – if not impossible – to lift the weight. Now do it with the word ‘strong’ in your head and see the result.

This is a concept I use with the pro team often on the run up to competition – positive reinforcement. When you are fatigued, use a few trigger words to push you on. When you panic or stress use different positive words to refocus yourself – but make sure these are positive phrases! The phrase ‘don’t be scared’ or ‘this is not bad’ are inherently negative – you need to be pumped to go from the offset.

The great news it, anyone can do it! Next time you don’t feel like training, make sure that you check your inner monologue and start using positive words to motivate you. Next time you are stuck grappling under some giant 100kg monster feeling you can’t escape, tell yourself you can.

I’d like to leave you with one final thought on interpretation. The singer Carly Simon had to give up touring because of the intense feelings of butterflies, her heart racing and a buzzing in her head – she felt terrified. When Bruce Springsteen heard this description , he said he couldn’t perform without these feelings of ‘excitement’!

Platinum Extreme has really been the catalyst behind my weight loss and a real change
in my life. I was fortunate enough to get the psychological shift I needed to start
making changes during my charity cycle - after cycling almost 500km in   some pretty
extreme conditions at 87kg I realised that I could achieve anything if I put my mind
to it and deep down I realised that I really wanted to make a positive change in my life.
I promised myself that when Platinum opened I couldn’t make any more excuses, I had to
get my body (and my life) back in shape.

Since I’ve started training at Platinum I have lost just over 15kg - it’s certainly been
a tough journey, but now that I am really seeing the results of the hard work I
have put in, I know that it’s all been worth it. I steadily gained the weight over the
last 4-5 years and I never truly admitted to myself (or wanted to see) that I was as
big as I was and now that I look back to where I was less than 6 months ago, I
know I’ve made some huge improvements in my life and am determined to never
be in that place, either physically or mentally again.

I think what’s really helped has been my kinesiology sessions with Chris Carter and
in recent weeks working through my strength training program he set for me. I
mean exercise obviously has played the biggest part in the drop of numbers on the
scales, but the weight loss has put new stresses on my body that have needed
attention to ensure physically I am able to keep training at my optimal level.
I was thrilled to hear that Chris practiced kinesiology. The sessions have really
helped in my rehabilitation and have enhanced my general health, fitness and wellbeing.

I’m a huge believer in holistic therapies and your ability to detect and correct
my imbalances, injuries and other issues in my daily life. I believe has greatly
increased my physical and mental capacity for training. For over 10 years I have
struggled with old sports injuries which were affecting particularly my MMA
training, over the years I’ve had countless physio sessions, but nothing has really
helped, that’s until a few months ago since I had my first kin session with Chris!
Kin has helped correct my physical and structural (and emotional) imbalances that
were preventing as/causing the pain and has since boosted my mobility in the
affected areas.

Unfortunate as it was to injure myself in June, the 3 weeks off forced me to reevaluate
the amount of training that I had been doing and admit to myself that over-training had
led to the injury - I realised that although I was feeling great about my weight loss,
13 training sessions in 6 days was way too much and not sustainable! Again, without the
kin sessions, I don’t think I could have got back to training as quickly as I did -
I can hardly believe that 8 weeks after tearing my peck I would be training at the level
that I am - and although it’s still not 100%, I recognise that every kinesiology session
I have is aiding in my recovery. Chris has helped me to understand how important strength
training is for me in my overall training schedule, injury prevention and increased
performance and I am amazed at the results so far - I am developing muscles I never even
knew existed and certainly never expected to see on my own body!!! And on top of that, I can
feel the effects of my increased strength during all of my classes, in particular MMA classes,
where I am able to execute maneuvers without feeling any discomfort.

This past week has seen me reach another goal in my weight loss journey - I’m
less than 70kg!!! And although I am not wholly focused on “the number” it’s an
incredible feeling and something I am so proud of myself for achieving. For me the
best indicator for keeping me on track has been fitting into my “thin” clothes, a few
pieces I kept in the wardrobe as a reminder of what I hoped one day I would wear
again. What’s got me to here? Exercise, exercise, exercise, a mostly sensible eating
plan (I try not to use the word diet, as I don’t believe in then, I think you need to
change the how and what you eat as a lifestyle choice), the kinesiology and
strength sessions to keep my body in a better working order and of course all of
the support and encouragement from my family, friends and everyone at Platinum.
You guys (and girl) have all shown an interest and genuine care in my journey to
date that goes far beyond what you consider a trainers involvement would be at
any other club that I have trained at, you’ve all made me enjoy training again and
god knows you need that to get out of bed for a 6.30 morning class in the middle
of winter in the pouring rain!!!

Thanks guys!

Shannon Ponton (Trainer from the Biggest Loser) starts his MMA training

Shannon started his MMA training at Platinum Extreme two weeks ago and this blog will record his progress

02.08.10

Five sessions in and Shannon has now got a real taste of what MMA offers-  not only as a fantastic sport that can be enjoyed as a spectator as well as a participant but also the benefits it can provide when training in it. Shannon was blown away when I got him doing one particular drill which included wall walk, sprawl and strike. In 60 seconds his heart rate hit 203bpm!!

“He’s like a kid with a new toy and I love feeding of his energy. He now wants to study and grade in ProMai MMA as well as use his new skills and the drills he’s learnt to train the next contestants on the Biggest Looser”.

Skills learnt so far.

Movements.

 Sprawling, Wall Walking, Pummelling,

Positions

Side Control, Top and Guard

Submissions

Arm Triangle, Arm Bar from Guard and Side Control. Shoulder Rotation from Guard and Guillotine.

Stay tuned

Richie Cranny

Shannons own words!

Here is the blog that Shannon has started to write and i’ll update it weekly for you.

MMA Training Week 1.

In order to stay fresh and motivated, I spend the off season of Biggest Loser searching for ways to challenge myself and learn new skills and techniques. After 19 years in the fitness industry I thought I’d seen and tried it all…was I in for a shock.

After being challenged to try a class at Platinum Extreme by a friend, I confidently turned up ready to ‘Get it On’. Far from ‘a class’, Richie and Pete put me through a 2 on 1 session. I was systematically pulled, stretched, choked and thrown around the cage for over an hour. Richie put me through a series of drills, punch, sprawl, wall walk, defend……my heart rate surged up over 200 BPM for the first time in years…. and I thought I was fit. How lame my 5 years experience in orthodox boxing seemed at that time. I had hardly ever seen MMA and had no preconceived idea to just how technical, skilful and demanding the sport was.

What the hell had I been missing out on? I was shown a series of chokes, submissions and counter attacks, way out of my comfort zone but loving it. MMA is just like a life size game of chess, attack and counter attack… you straighten – I bend…you push - I pull!

I can’t remember being more exhausted after a mere hour of training, my energy expenditure was over  1000 Cal. Physically fatigued but mentally set alight, I couldn’t wait for my next session!

MMA Training Week 2

After the muscle stiffness and physical exhaustion had subsided my head had been filled with a whole new world of possibilities! Takedowns, chokes, submissions and escapes, I found myself at any opportune moment mentally rehearsing the few moves I had been shown.  Far from being satisfied having learnt a ‘rear naked choke’ my quest for knowledge and skill had been ignited. I found my training sessions lasting over 1 ½ hrs, but passing in what seemed like minutes. The drills, as brutal and draining as they seem, have already started to improve my agility, co-ordination & FITNESS!! This ‘stuff’ is awesome and has definitely refocussed, reenergized and motivated me during the off season of ‘The Biggest Loser’. Can’t wait to rip into what the next lessons may hold.
